ABSTRACT

Commonly, the lateral canthus is located higher than medial canthus and many people are often shown short lateral palpebral fissure. This seemed to be shown as wild, anxious, and pierced eye. Many surgeons have made desperate efforts to improve this by anchoring lateral canthus to lower part of orbital bone. But, authors would like to show the two-third portion of the lateral lower eyelid by anchoring to capsulopalpebral fascia via transconjunctival approach. Authors performed this operation since 2009 and first named it by "Nun-Mit-Teuim" in Korean. Key of this operation is that anchoring of the lower tarsus and capsulopalpebral fascia via transconjunctival approach without resection of skin. It is not necessary to remove a redundant conjunctiva. Commonly, the lateral canthoplasty is performed simultaneously to descend a lower eyelid easily. After the operation, it can be observed that the lower eyelid lift up a little bit for 1~2 weeks and redundant conjunctiva will be constricted in several months. The operation is defined as anchoring the lower tarsus to capsulopalpebral fascia. The limit of the operation is it cannot change the position of the lateral canthus. Over-lowering the lower eyelid to increase palpebral fissure, results in scleral show and unfavorable line. Thus, it is important that surgeons should remind the purpose and limitation of this operation.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: On this study, we investigated the effects of curcumin and adipose-derived stromal cells(ADSCs) in wound healing process, especially in the aspect of synergic effects when they were administrated simultaneously. METHODS: Curcumin(40mg/kg) and/or 1.0x10(6) ADSCs were applied to an 1.5x1.5cm-sized full thickness wound on the backs of male Lewis rats(n=5 in each group). In control group(n=5), saline was administrated instead of curcumin and ASCs. The wound size was followed by computer planimetry in 5, 7, and 14 days, and wounds were harvested for histological analysis in 7 and 14 days. RESULTS: The dimensions of wounds of curcumin, ADSCs, and curcumin-ADSCs group significantly decreased in 5, 7, 14 days compared with those of control group(p0.05). There were infiltration of more epithelization and more precisely organization of extracellular matrix in curcumin, ADSCs, and curcumin-ADSCs group compared with those of control group. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that curcumin and ADSCs have beneficial effects in the acceleration of wound healing. Although the simultaneous application of curcmin and ADSCs also has beneficial effects on wound healing, there are no significant synergic effects.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Superficial temporal artery(STA) aneurysms are very rare and mostly occur as pseudoaneurysms secondary to trauma. Clinical diagnosis of STA pseudoaneurysm is based on a history of trauma or surgery to frontotemporal region, which presents with pulsatile mass. To confirm diagnosis, many imaging strategies can be used such as digital subtraction angiography, sonography, CT and MRI. But, these imaging modalities are invasive or inaccurate or expensive. Thus, we used 3D CT angiography to confirm STA aneurysm and to get accurate information. METHODS: We have experienced two cases of pulsatile mass on the temporal area, suspected as STA pseudoaneurysms. On the basis of clinical information, we performed 3D CT angiography to get more accurate information about this pulsatile mass and to confirm diagnosis. On the basis of information from 3D CT angiography, we performed operation. RESULTS: The lesions were diagnosed as pseudoaneurysm of superficial temporal artery by 3D CT angiography, and surgically resected safely without any complication on the basis of information from 3D CT angiography. 3D CT angiography was excellent diagnostic method for detecting STA pseudoaneurysms, and effectively showed many information about pseudoanerysms such as relationship between the aneurysms and surrounding structures, and its size. CONCLUSION: We could effectively diagnose and treat on the basis of information from 3D CT angiography. We present our cases with a brief review of the literature related to STA traumatic pseudoaneurysms.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Recently, childhood obesity has been increasing steeply. Many obese children have complications and high risks to become obese as adults. Therefore, we performed this study to assess childhood obesity in Kwangju area. METHODS: We examined 11,039 children(boys:5,547, girls:5,492) of ages 6-12 years. We defined obesity as more than 97th percentile of weight at each height. We also examined the degree of obesity by comparing with stsndard weight, which is defined as more than 20% above the standard weight for height. We identified four groups according to the degree of obeiity. The ranges for each group was as follows : obesity at from 20% above the standard weight for height, mild obesity at 30% below and 20% above the standard weight for height, and moderate obesity at 50% below and 30% above the standard weight for height, and severe obesity at 50% above the standard weight for height. RESULTS: The prevalence of obesity that exceeded the weight centiles at each height by more than 97th pereentile was 12.17%. The prevalence of obesity that exceeded the standard weight for height by more than 20% was 13.31%. Among them, 8.02/o were mild obesity, 4.44% were moderate obesity and 0. 84% were severe obesity. CONCLUSIONS: Recently, the frequency of childhood obesity goes high in our society. We now know that obesity is a risk factor for some diseases, and therefore, more effective approaches should be developed treat and prevent childhood obesity.
